KINO CLUB

KINO CLUB is a new Thursday night screening programme presenting a wide range of cinema, documentary and animation and artists’ film and video, all held in the Basement at Modern Art Oxford.

Each season they work with exhibiting artists to select a programme of films to complement the exhibitions. This autumn they make a foray into world and classic cinema with films selected by Berlin-based artist Manfred Pernice, and Birmingham and London-based artists Simon & Tom Bloor.

10/11 - Go See 07 - Eadweard Muybridge

Muybridge was the man who famously proved a horse can fly. Adapting the very latest technology to his ends, he proved his theory by getting a galloping horse to trigger the shutters of a bank of cameras. He invented the zoopraxiscope, a method of projecting animated versions of his photographs as short moving sequences, which anticipated subsequent developments in the history of cinema.

American Night (2009) is a homage to the medium of film and a reflection on the construction of fictional narratives using cinematographic and iconographic references. A five-channel film installation shot on a Sergio Leone film set in southern Spain and on the Canary Islands, it is one of the most complex works to date by the Berlin based artist Julian Rosefeldt, who has made a name for himself with lavishly produced multi-screen exhibitions.
