ALEXANDER

"For decades [Calder's] Circus, lent by the artist in 1970 to the Whitney Museum of American Art, has set flight to the imaginations of visiting children and adults. Now the museum is celebrating its genesis in "Alexander Calder: The Paris Years, 1926-1933," an exhibition opening on Thursday that brings the young Calder and the giddy ferment of his artistic circle to life."

GEORGES

Georges Descombes' landscapes are characterised by an intensive investigation of the qualities and history of the site, deriving their vocabularies from the existing characteristics of the place. His best-known works are the Bijlmer Memorial in Amsterdam, the Parc de Lancy in Geneva, and the Swiss Path around Lake Uri in Switzerland. Current projects include the Parc de la Cour du Maroc in Paris, a riverfront park in Lyon, and the transformation of the River Aire outside Geneva.

BUILDING OF THE MONTH - SOLID VOID

Cecil Balmond: Solid Void, the first major U.S. exhibition on the work of Balmond and his London-based Advanced Geometry Unit (AGU) at the international, multi-disciplinary engineering firm ARUP. Solid Void investigates concepts in select theories behind building-geometry, numbers and patterns-through a large-scale, site-specific installation that contrasts the features of the Prairie-style architecture of the Madlener House. Balmond is best known for his daring project collaborations with some of the world's most celebrated architects.
