09/10 - Gorky at Tate

10 February – 3 May 2010

These works - particularly the drawings - talk about the 'space between objects as well as the objects".

"Works such as Waterfall 1943 are evocative, layered, and translucent, with a liquid glowing quality. Gorky's characteristic paintings of this final period include biomorphic forms in strong colours, shifting abstract elements and the energetic line that he developed in his drawings. They capture a sensual enjoyment of landscape as well as the mood and memories that the subjects can evoke."

09/10 - Modern Times: responding to chaos

"16 January - 14 March 2010

Modern Times is a new series of exhibitions where we invite creative people to trace pathways through the 20th and 21st centuries. Exhibition by exhibition, the series will build an informal, accumulative history of the art of our times.

Lutz Becker is a film-maker, painter and curator of exhibitions. Born in East Berlin, he came to London to study at the Slade and stayed on. For this exhibition he combined drawing, the oldest and most fundamental medium, with film, one of the most modern. Both, in their own ways, embody time and a sense of the transient."

09/10 - DAVID ROCK // From 50's Architectural drawings to recent paintings

"A world away from computers, they prefigure the skills of the young designer who became a key player in the Basil Spence studio, and the 60s development of multi-disciplinary Building Design Partnership; founded the 1970’s workspace movement and his own practice; and became President RIBA. His early, painterly fascination with colour, texture and weathering of materials has been constant throughout later painting - where observation and presentation of buildings and the urban scene celebrate the romantic overtones of even the most quirky, messy, layers of history and modern intrusions."

09/10 - Inscription: drawing, making, thinking

"‘It is often the act of drawing itself, the deep engagement in the act of unconscious thinking through making, that gives rise to an image or idea…the hand feels the invisible and formless stimulus, pulls it into the world of space and matter and gives it form' - Juhani Pallasmaa, The Thinking Hand

An exhibition of work by three contemporary artists, all previous winners of Jerwood awards, who each use mark making as a way of recording, developing and communicating ideas: David Connearn, Philip Eglin and Charlotte Hodes. The exhibition shows a selection of finished works as well installations and working samples that give insight into the thinking and working processes of the artists involved. " 13. Jan - 21. Feb 10

09/10 - MOMA Oxford

"Miroslaw Balka uses video as a repository of visual and thematic material, extending a sculptural language that is rich in associations with history and his native Poland. The body and its limitations, memory, and the space between looking and knowing are recurring themes."

"Coinciding with his monumental How It Is installation for the Tate’s Turbine Hall, this exhibition explores a different region of Balka’s art – his video works. Violent gesture and real sites of WWII atrocity are presented, all shot through with the artist’s usual poeticism."
